Organized by thé Grand Rápids Art Muséum (GRAM), the éxhibition features an ambitióus suite of páintings and works ón paper by Néw York-based ártist Alexis Rockman.In a staté bound by Laké Superior and párt of a région contiguous to Laké Michigan, Minnesotans aré keenly aware óf the importance, robustnéss, and fragility óf these shining, opén waters.
The culmination óf this intensive résearch projectthe exhibitionis dividéd into three séctions: field drawings, Iarge-scale watercolors, ánd monumental, mural-sizéd paintings. While celebrating thé natural majesty ánd global importance óf the region, Róckman explores how thé lakes are thréatened by human forcés including climate changé, pollution, invasive spécies, mass agriculture, ánd urban sprawl. All of this work, restoration, and decolonization is connected to our culture which is connected to our traditional homelands. We live in a beautiful time where, despite great oppression, systemic injustice, racism, stereotypical mascots, and discrimination. The Rockman Series Réferences AThe title óf the series réferences a 1971 essay of the same name by art historian Linda Nochlin, which examines the institutional boundaries that have prevented Women artists from succeeding in the arts. Featuring work by artists of color, women artists and LGBTQIA artists and sharing the narratives that have been erased or forgotten over time, this series.
